5 minutes with Associate Director, Kit O’Brien
What sort of law do you specialise in and how do you help people?
I’m a family lawyer specialising in helping people as they embark on relationships (using prenuptial and cohabitation agreements) and when those relationships break down whether they’re married or unmarried. My job is to help people achieve fair and appropriate resolutions of their issues as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible whilst being more than ready to “fight their corner” if the need arises.
What does a day-in-the-life of a lawyer look like?
No two days are the same, I might be meeting with clients either virtually or face to face, drafting or reviewing documents, speaking to other lawyers or out and about meeting people in the business community.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Helping people through a situation they never wanted to be in, supporting them as they move forward and seeing them settle into their changed situation with hope for the future.
GL Law have implemented a hybrid agile way of working, how does that affect your role as a lawyer?
It was a big part of my joining the firm. I think that hybrid agile working is absolutely the way forward and it’s great to be part of a firm that is forward thinking enough to have embraced it fully.
Favourite working from home perk?
Not sure it’s a perk, but the cat loves online networking!
If you didn’t go down the legal career path, what would you be doing now?
I genuinely have no idea. My original degree was in drama and theatre studies and if you’d told me then I would become a solicitor I’d have been surprised (and probably horrified).
When you’re not working, where would we find you?
Cuddled up with the cat and a good book, or with my daughter on one of our regular theatre jaunts (we’re musical lovers).
Dream holiday destination?
That’s a tough one. I’ve always fancied Iceland. But I’d also like to visit Vietnam.
Last good book?
I treated myself to the new Robert Galbraith “The Ink Black Heart”. I think it’s a superb series and the latest instalment certainly didn’t disappoint.
What’s your TV boxset binge?
I’m not a massive TV watcher, but did burn through Schitt’s Creek.
You’re usually the one giving out advice, but what’s the last piece of good advice you were given?
It was actually given to my daughter but I think it covers most things – Make Good Choices
