James Myatt is a Director, Head of the Family Department and Head of Personal Legal Services, based in the Bristol office.
With over 40 years of experience in Family Private Client Law, James specialises in complex and high value asset cases and acts on behalf of business people, entrepreneurs, farming and landed clients, professionals, and their spouses or partners. Which areas of family law do you specialise in?
Divorce and cohabitation breakdown – particularly cases involving substantial and/or complex assets, businesses, farms and pensions. I am also a trained Collaborative Family lawyer.
What made you decide to become a family solicitor?
I’ve always had an interest in this specialism and over time I dropped other areas of law. However, I do still deal with Private Client work.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Helping clients to separate and divorce with dignity and achieve a fair outcome – especially where the parties are able to remain to good terms.
What’s the most common piece of advice you give?
Don’t stop speaking to one another if it’s safe to do so – especially if you have children.
What do you wish people knew about family law when they’re considering getting in touch with a solicitor?
That separation and divorce are not inevitable. Early legal advice and support might enable the relationship to be saved.
What’s the biggest mistake you see clients make?
Having unrealistic expectations.
If you hadn’t become a solicitor, what would you be doing now?
I was invited very early on in my career to become a radio DJ – so that.
When you’re not working, where would we find you?
Playing tennis, swimming and relaxing.
What’s your dream holiday destination?
When was the last time you laughed out loud?
Earlier this morning.
You’re usually the one giving out advice, but what’s the last piece of good advice you were given?
Choose your battles.
