5 minutes with Residential Property Solicitor, Emma Burnett

03 March 2022 | Emma Burnett

Emma Burnett is a Solicitor in the Residential Property team, based in Bristol. She has over 5 years experience of residential conveyancing.

Specialising in property law, Emma acts for clients wishing to buy or sell, complete transfers and re-mortgage residential property.  Emma has developed a breadth of experience across a range of property transactions from small retirement flats to large property portfolio work, and assists people with the extension of their lease term through both formal and informal processes.

We caught up with Emma to find out more about life as a Solicitor…

What sort of law do you specialise in and how do you help people?

Property law and residential conveyancing in particular. I like to think I help people by bringing a little bit of calm to what everyone knows can be one of the most stressful times of people’s lives. Buying and selling houses is often not straightforward but I hope that I can offer solid advice when it is needed.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Variety. No two sales are the same, no two purchases are the same and no two clients are the same therefore no matter what you are working on, you know you will be learning something new all the time.

GL Law have implemented a hybrid agile way of working, how does that affect your role as a lawyer?

For me working from home provides more time in the working day, less hours in the car commuting and that means that I am more relaxed at either end of the day. I love being able to pick and choose when I am in the office.

Favourite working from home perk?

Being around to see my little boy get home from nursery and listen to him chatting all about his day.

If you didn’t go down the legal career path, what would you be doing now?

I previously qualified as a Charted Surveyor so I would probably have stuck that out if I hadn’t switched to law.

When you’re not working, where would we find you?

Probably in Cornwall or Devon. In the winter I’ll be out walking the coastal paths, in the summer I’ll be on a boat.

Dream holiday destination?

Caribbean. Crystal blue waters, flat calm seas and cocktails aplenty.

Last good book?

I have a 2 ½ year old toddler. Reading got forgotten a long time ago!

You’re usually the one giving out advice, but what’s the last piece of good advice you were given?

Just stop and listen occasionally. We are all super busy in life but if we just take some time to stop and listen we can all learn things from those around us.
