Better Food’s success as foodie pioneers in Bristol

16 July 2010 | Melissa Toney

The Better Food Company is a well-respected Bristol-based organic retailer. It’s known as a pioneering business aiming to revolutionise people’s interaction between good food and shopping whilst protecting the environment and cultivating respectful relationships throughout the food production industry. The business has established premises in St Werburgh’s and on Whiteladies Road in central Bristol.

The legal challenge

With expansion plans coming to fruition, Better Food required expert legal advice prior to taking up residence of a third shop and café at in Wapping Wharf – a new urban, harbourside quarter in Bristol. With new premises to rent and fit out ready to trade, GL Law were engaged to provide commercial property advice and expertise for a new commercial lease and agreements for the fit out of the Store, ensuring a smooth transaction for the Company

Working closely with Better Food over a three-month period, GL Law ensured a smooth transition to meet with the opening deadline. Taking a practical approach and proactively managing each stage of the legal process, from the signing of leases to fit-out and then to launch, the client was kept informed on progress at all times.

Working for the first time with an external legal team, Phil Haughton and the rest of the Better Food team were able to focus on both running the existing business and other aspects of developing, fitting out and launching the new store in time for the grand opening. The launch of the new store has very much set a template and benchmark for future stores to be opened. The superb location and ethos of the Company has cultivated continued positive relationships with the landlord of the development as well, showcasing the ongoing success of the Company.

Why GL?

Phil Haughton, owner of The Better Food Company:

“GL have been superb in handling and delivering our needs. I find their straightforward, transparent approach refreshing, and I was fully involved and updated throughout the conveyancing process. We like to work with partners that understand our business, our values and our mission; Julian and the team at GL are personable and passionate in their own right, which fits with our outlook.  The process of acquiring new premises is not easy but GL made it feel effortless.”
