Bristol as a UK food destination

In the last few weeks the Financial Times has stated that “Bristol has arguably the best food scene in the UK” and five Bristol restaurants have been named among The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants, with the city described as a “gastronomic boomtown”.  The restaurants honoured are:

  • Adelina Yard
  • Bulrush
  • Casamia
  • The Ethicurean
  • The Pony & Trap

Laurel Ives, editor of The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants, said: “The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants’ judging panel is made up of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the industry, from chefs and owners, to our own expert writers. They have picked out the very best establishments that the UK’s impressive culinary scene has to offer.”

It’s impressive that Bristol has five restaurants on this list.  You can tell the draw of the city’s scene by the fact the Ivy opened their first outpost outside of London in Bristol, as did another London brand, Polpo.

Bristol’s unique culture and identity has helped to shape the city into the major foodie destination it is today. Indeed, it’s the passion and creativity of the city’s inhabitants that make Bristol a truly distinctive and joyous place to eat, drink and most importantly live.  Bristol is one of the only cities to have a Good Food Plan sanctioned by its local authority that sets out the following vision for Bristol:

“Imagine you lived in a truly sustainable food city, renowned for the vibrancy and diversity of its food culture, and for a food system which, from field to fork, is good for people, places and the planet. A city where good food is visible and celebrated in every corner and where everyone has access to fresh, seasonal, local, organic and fairly traded food that is tasty, healthy and affordable, no matter where they live.

Picture a city where every school, hospital or care home, every restaurant and work place canteen serves only delicious sustainable food; where good food enterprises multiply and thrive; where people of every age, and from every background, are developing skills in growing and cooking and are practically involved in creating a positive and inclusive food culture in their own communities.

Would you want to live in a city like this? We believe that that this is an achievable reality for Bristol”

This plan led to Bristol being awarded the Sustainable Food Cities Silver Award.

There are so many exciting things happening in the city’s food scene at the moment, and not just in the restaurant sector.  What makes the Bristol culinary scene different from other cities is that it’s full of strong independent shops, restaurants, cafes, producers and great farmer’s markets, where customers can buy direct from the producers.

At Gregg Latchams, we’ve recently completed work for a few businesses that have had an impact on the already exciting food scene in Bristol, one of which is Good Sixty.

Case study – Good Sixty:

This business has the ambition to get great quality food directly from independent shops, producers and cafes.  Their aim is to help create wealthier, better-connected communities by making independent food stores more accessible. This happens by connecting people with hidden culinary gems, micro producers and great independent retailers near to where they live or choose to visit. Already, there are over 25 retailers selling their wares through Good Sixty, with 14 categories listed so far: greengrocers, wholefoods shops, butchers and Halal butchers, bakers, fishmongers, cheesemongers, delis, patisseries, wine merchants, micro-distilleries and more. You’ll even find an increasing number of Bristol’s favourite cafés and restaurants on the site too.

We were engaged at a very early stage and helped the two founders with the following:

  1. Their company set-up to ensure they had the right structure and were investment ready
  2. The contract between them and their web developer
  3. The terms and conditions and privacy and cookies policy for use on their website
  4. The agreement between them and their retailers
  5. Trade mark application to protect their brand
