Construction Breakfast – March 2017

Remediation and Waste Management – T & P Regeneration’s Duncan Guthrie

Today saw another fantastic turnout at our March Construction Breakfast at Bordeaux Quay. Representatives from the construction, engineering and property sectors were all eager to hear more industry insight from this month’s guest speaker, following a generous spread of breakfast bites and lively discussions.

This month, we welcomed our new Head of Construction & Engineering, Andrew Evans. He introduced Duncan Guthrie, from T & P Regeneration, as our guest speaker to discuss the vital issue of waste management and remediation.

Duncan discussed the difficulties facing the construction industry when dealing with large projects, citing a £2m overspend on one large build due to the discovery of asbestos. He explained that although the testing process took time, T & P Regeneration used this slowdown to investigate different waste treatments, meaning any excess products could all be correctly disposed of and the affected area of asbestos could be refined to a small portion on the site.

Highlighting his point, Duncan brought along some of the cleaned waste from the build and emptied it onto the table as he enlightened his audience with the moral of the story… Thorough investigation is a vital part of any build process to reduce spends on large projects. By taking their time and properly investigating the asbestos found on the site, T & P Regeneration reduced what could have been a £2m overspend to just £250,000.

During the Q&A session, Duncan faced questions on how waste management can slow a project down, responding with helpful advice on how to deal with the Environment Agency and how to always ensure compliance with regulations. When asked about the internal processes that T & P Regeneration go through to ensure they stay competitive, Duncan discussed the accreditation process and training that the company delivers for all employees.

This was another invaluable session for attendees, and a great example of how the construction industry and the legal expertise of Gregg Latchams can work more closely together. Our next construction breakfast will take place on Tuesday 4 April, with speaker Paul Chappell, Regional Building Surveying Director, Mace Group. Click here to book your place!
