Getting to know… Andrew Evans

31 March 2017 |

Andrew recently joined GL as our new Head of Construction & Engineering, coming from a strong background in commercial projects.

Why did you choose to join Gregg Latchams?

I’m excited by the opportunity to lead and grow an already established and well-regarded construction and engineering presence. In addition, GL provides a base to connect to my established sector specialisms from in-house experience in infrastructure, waste management, water and environmental projects.

Could you give a brief overview of your career to date?

I initially qualified into a private practice construction team in Bristol and after a few years joined the in-house legal team of Pennon Group PLC, a FTSE 250 waste and water business, which leads best practice in its sectors. In this role, I was privileged to be handed the opportunity to lead and deliver construction, engineering and commercial projects across an interesting and highly commercial set of industries. I join GL after five years in that environment, keen to apply the skills I’ve developed to a broader range of sectors and clients.

Which sector do you specialise in and what are you expertise?

My specialism is in delivery of commercial projects in a way that meets or exceeds the client’s objectives. Frequently these involve one or more construction or engineering aspects; for example, the establishment of an energy from waste facility along with the commercial services it requires to receive fuel, operate and deal with residual materials. My additional expertise includes an ability to analyse and resolve commercial risks around the project; for instance, negotiating offtake agreements for newly established facilities in a way that protects the client and the overall project objectives.

What quality do you pride yourself on?

My in-house experience has taught me what it means to be a part of a commercial team, integrated with the client in a way that adds value to the projects I’m involved in. It’s really satisfying to help steer and demonstrably improve the outcomes of a project.

Are you a member of a legal committee or board?

I’m a South West Regional Co-Ordinator for the Society of the Construction Law and I’ve also established the regional branch of the Junior Society of Construction Law in 2010.

Have you received any legal awards or honours?

I was nominated for the Legal Business In-House Rising Star in 2015.

What is your greatest work achievement and how has it shaped your career?

I have helped deliver a number of long term infrastructure projects which will supply energy, waste services and water to millions of people over a number of decades. It’s a great feeling to have contributed to these.

Please tell us a little known fact about yourself…

I love track driving and even managed to get a little tuition from Erling Jensen, Jenson Button’s namesake!
