Getting to know… James Myatt

03 February 2017 |

At Gregg Latchams, our people are at the core of our values. Most recently, James Myatt has joined our Family team as Director. A reputable family lawyer in Bristol, he brings with him a wealth of experience in financial and pension issues relating to divorce and separation.

How did you first decide to pursue a legal career? Was there a pivotal moment?

My dad wanted a doctor in the family – being a lawyer was an acceptable substitute!

Is there a person that you considered as a role model early in your life that has had an impact on what you do now?

My dad would drum into us as children to be meticulous and polite to everyone

Where did you complete your legal training?

UWIST (now Cardiff University) and Bristol Poly (now UWE)

Where have you worked previously in your career?

Lyons Davidson and Thrings

What is the biggest lesson you have learnt during your time in the industry?

Human nature has an infinite capacity to surprise, delight (and appal).

Which sectors/areas do you gain the most enjoyment from?

Family law disputes and private client arrangements involving finances, pensions and complex assets. Marketing and practice development.

Are you a member of any legal groups/societies/trusts?

Resolution, Bristol Collaborative Law Pod, the Guild of Guardians of Bristol. I am a trustee on a number of family trusts. I am an Ambassador for Quartet Community Foundation. I have been asked to become an independent trustee of Arnolfini and a trustee at the Avon Riding for the Disabled Centre at Henbury. I’m also the Under Sheriff of Bristol.

What do you personally pride yourself on?

Going the extra mile and not letting anyone down.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role at Gregg Latchams?

Lots of things – getting to know everyone, continuing to practice law and developing/taking forward the firm and the Family team. In that respect, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Vicky (Victoria Danniell) for creating such a well-regarded team.
