Gregg Latchams help SMEs to grow and protect their brands
The importance of establishing and maintaining a connection between your consumers and your brand was the key theme at the ‘Grow and Protect your Brand’ event, hosted by Gregg Latchams on Wednesday 14 of November.
Bringing together start-ups and small businesses in the food and drink sector, from pasta makers to craft breweries, the discussion focused on strategy, how to clear trademarks, and how to develop and safeguard brands. The aim was to demystify the process of clearing trademarks and give people the tools – as well as practical advice – to make the right decisions when building their brands, and ultimately stop people from getting sued for copyright infringement.
Touching on everything from toilet cleaners to questioning why there are so many brands registered for mead in the UK, Head of IP and Media Chris Sutoto-Haywood led the discussion on the night with clear and concise pieces of advice. ‘Record everything and be clear on ownership’ and ‘monitor your registration and take action’ being notable calls to action to the delegates in attendance.
“It was a really interesting turn-out. Most of them had significant experience branding their own products, which meant that the GL team were able to help with some of the fiddly specifics that often catch business owners out. Some good introductions to finance and management professionals were made too – a fruitful night for everyone,” Chris Sutoto-Haywood said.
The event, held at The Forge, a picturesque event space in the heart of Bristol’s Arts Quarter sought to address the real demand for expertise and advice on copyright issues and branding across the city’s exciting and diverse food and drink sector, whilst also providing a platform for discussion among industry peers over drinks and canapés befitting the foodie audience.
Marti Burgess, head of Gregg Latchams Food, Drink and Hospitality sector said “This is not a sector that gets together very often so it was nice to see the attendees all talking with each other and sharing information about the challenges they face. It was also good to be able to offer our insight on the industry in an informal setting and seeing where we could them now or in the future.”
The importance of the event was underlined by the number of questions delegates had around IP and scaling up raised in casual conversation after Chris had concluded his talk. As attendee Luke Sapsed of Reach Brands had to say “Food businesses often underestimate the value of seeking advice on branding at an early stage. So they start to trade without thinking through the brand name and then just at the point their brand is starting to get some traction, they get caught up in battle with another brand with a similar name”.
