Local Economy: Gregg Latchams sees steady market in M&A Activity

07 July 2017 | Paul Hardman

The resilience of the local market in mergers and activities was apparent from figures prepared by Gregg Latchams to the half year ending June 2017.

Paul Hardman, Head of the Company and Commercial Department, commented: “We are seeing a steady stream of corporate enquiries and that does not seem to have been particularly affected by the referendum vote a year ago to leave the EU. For the first part of the year we have completed or are working on over 30 deals with a value of over £40m up by over 200% on the same time last year.”

However, the landscape may not be as simple as it initially appears. Paul explained: “A large number were reconstructions or demergers including share buy backs of one description or another suggesting that business owners are taking the opportunity to tidy up group and shareholding structures in anticipation of change to come.”

Gregg Latchams has always prided itself on its Bristol location, a hub of technology and innovation throughout every entrepreneurial SME. Paul has certainly seen evidence of this: “A significant number are tech related private equity investments reflecting the entrepreneurial flair with which Bristol is fast becoming associated and there is also a good mix of more straight M&A work which I am pleased to see is tending to progress in a steady but sure way again reflecting that despite recent reports of a decline in business confidence, it has not dried up altogether.”

Reassuring words there when there is just so much uncertainty. If you are interested in learning more about this topic, or chatting with Paul about this short overview, get in touch with us here.
