Is your website or mobile app compliant?

Sometimes, it is easy to forget that the Web (as we know it) only turned 25 in 2014. In those 25 years, the Web has become a universal communication tool, trading hub and social phenomenon. Online B2C sales in the UK exceeded £100 billion for the first time in 2014 and 72% of adults in the UK used social networking sites in 2014.

Over those 25 years, the Web has also become increasingly regulated, with governments attempting to extend the same level of protection that citizens are guaranteed offline into the online world. In fact, the United Nations recently reaffirmed (PDF) Internet access as a fundamental human right.

The Web has also become a battleground between corporations and criminals: the attacks against Ashley Madison, Sony and TalkTalk’s websites to name but a few high-profile examples.

Many businesses and organisations, from start-ups to multinationals are unaware of the legal, financial and reputational implications arising from operating a website, launching a mobile application, advertising and selling goods or services online or empowering users to share content.
